Recreational Bronze

Recreational Bronze is our youth transition program between CanSkate and STARSkate for skaters who are not yet working with a private coach. These sessions allow skaters to continue learning in a structured group lesson environment while being introduced to the STARSkate disciplines of FreeSkate, Skills, and Ice Dance.

Each 45-minute session typically includes:

  • Approximately 30 minutes of group instruction
  • Introduction to FreeSkate, Skills, and Ice Dance
  • Instruction from several Skate Canada Professional Coaches

Recreational Bronze Sessions are intended for skaters working on CanSkate Stage 6 or STAR 1–2. Skaters must have successfully completed CanSkate Stage 5 to register.

Private coaching is not offered during Recreational Bronze Sessions, as the focus remains on coach-led group instruction and foundational skill development. Skaters who have successfully completed CanSkate Stage 6 and are working with a private coach should register in Bronze Sessions. Recreational Bronze is not a prerequisite for Bronze.

Sessions are 45 minutes in length

Assessments:

Skaters working on CanSkate Stage 6 will continue earning their CanSkate ribbons and badges. Once Stage 6 has been completed, skaters will begin working toward STAR 1 assessments in FreeSkate, Skills, and Dance. Coaches will notify families when a skater is ready to be assessed. A Skate Canada assessment fee applies.

Next Steps:

When skaters feel ready to begin private coaching or would like to pursue a more focused figure skating pathway, they may transition to Bronze Sessions, provided they have successfully completed CanSkate Stage 6. Bronze Sessions combine one-on-one coaching with independent practice, allowing skaters to continue progressing through the STARSkate program while working toward STAR 1 and STAR 2 assessments.
