NO SKATING ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13TH

Friendly reminder there is No skating on Sunday, October 13th due to Thanksgiving.

Don't forget that you can always check our Key Dates page on our website.

CANCELLED SKATING

We regret to inform you that ALL SESSIONS from 5 PM onwards today are CANCELLED due to a permitting issue.

Skaters will be credited for this session on their uplifter accounts within a week.

We apologize for the inconvenience!

GROUP ROTATIONS BEGIN

This is the first week of station rotations for our CanSkate/Fundamentals program! During the first few weeks, our goal is to help skaters feel comfortable on the ice and get accustomed to their new groups. Skaters have been working on all three disciplines with their main coach.

Switching stations ensures all skaters who visit that coach will receive the same quality instruction, allowing for optimal progressions and equal focused time on each discipline.

Skaters also have the opportunity to meet different coaches and benefit from their unique coaching styles!

Skaters will rotate between 3 stations: Balance, Control & Agility.

  • Balance: Forward, edges, crossovers
  • Control: Stopping, Backwards, Speed
  • Agility: Turns, Jumps

All skaters will receive ribbons and badges upon mastering specific skills. They need ribbons for agility, balance, and control to earn a badge.

For Example Agility 1 + Balance 1 + Control 1 = Stage 1

Some skaters excel in one discipline and may have multiple ribbons, such as Agility 1, Balance 1 & 2, without Control. They cannot receive their badge until completing Control.

Ribbons & badges will be handed out 4 times throughout this season (similar to school).

For a successful session, we recommend preparing your child for the upcoming rotation before the class.

RISING STARS AUDITION - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9TH @ 7:15

Attention, attention!

Is your skater working on badge 3 - 6 and between 4-9 years old?

Do they have a passion for figure skating, the drive to excel or the dream to compete?

We have a few spaces remaining in our Rising Stars Program and are opening up spots for a 1-day audition for any skaters who want to try out!

Audition: Wednesday, October 9th from 7:15-8:00pm

This invitation-only program comprises 4-9-year-old skaters identified by our coaching staff or who have a natural talent for figure skating and runs concurrently with our Canskate and Fundamentals programs.   This means your skater will have the unique opportunity of working towards completing their Canskate badges and STAR 1 figure skating tests all in the same skating season.   STAR 1 is Skate Canada's first level of competitive figure skating and is geared toward skaters looking to progress in the sport.

Rising Stars runs once per week on Wednesday from 7:15-8:00 pm.  All participants must also be enrolled in either a Canskate or Fundamentals session.

We have a wonderful team of coaches from provincial to national levels who will be working on jumps, spins, stroking, and edges with these skaters in a challenging yet fun and engaging environment.  We have only a few spots remaining so we hope to see you there!

The audition cost is $25 and will run concurrently with our Rising Stars session on Wednesday, October 9th.

If the audition is successful, skaters will receive an access code to enroll in the prorated class.

Registration for the audition is available on Uplifter starting today!

Sign Up Here!

If you have any questions about the program, please reach out to Shawn Verasammy, our Star Skate Coordinator at eyscstarskate@gmail.com

Fall 2024

The East York Skating Club is very excited to welcome you to our Canskate Programs.

  • Thursday Sessions-  September 12th
  • Sunday Sessions - September 15th
  • Tuesday Sessions - September 17th

Equipment:

All skaters must have the following items:

  • Sharpened Skates (Hockey or Figure Skates)
    • We do not recommend plastic skates as it doesn't allow for proper ankle and knee bending
    • Dull blades will not grip the ice
  • CSA-Approved Hockey helmet
    • must be worn until completing level 5
    • recommended to have a cage while in Pre-Can
  • Mitts/Gloves for hand protection & warmth
  • Coat
  • Skaters in pre-can/beginner may want waterproof pants.  Skaters will be practicing how to fall and stand up - sitting on the ice, they will get wet.

Please see Skate Canada Video for more information:

Arena Entry:

Please make sure to arrive early to allow for time to find parking as our lot fills up quickly. You should also allow at least 15 minutes to put on your skates and helmets. On the first session, a volunteer will be at the front desk in the lobby to hand out nametags.

Skaters will receive a sticker nametag to place on their helmets, and a coloured dot will be used to indicate their group.

Skaters & Parents can proceed downstairs and choose a changeroom to put on their skates.

Session Flow:

For the first session, our On-Ice Coordinator will group the skaters based on their current Levels.  If they are new, they will automatically be placed in level 1.

For skaters coming from a different club, please email us any of their achievements so we can update their files/groups accordingly.

Over the first few weeks, based on their assessments and recommendations from the coaches, skaters may switch groups to find the best placement!  A sticker on their name tag/helmet will indicate their group colour.

Pre-Can will stay with their coach for the entire season, for 30 minutes.

CanSkate with a Pre-Can class running at the same time will enter at the east doors (where the hockey teams would sit).  Please note, that Pre-Can starts 5 minutes after the Canskate start time.

Canskate, Tween, Teen & Fundamental Skaters will have a group warm-up, 30 minutes of classes, followed by a group activity & cool down.   Classes will cover 3 skating disciples: Balance (forwards, edges, crossovers) Agility (turns, spins, jumps) and Control (stopping, backwards & speed). After a few weeks (once skaters are comfortable moving and the groups are set) skaters will rotate stations to see 3 coaches, each coach focusing on a particular discipline.  Switching stations ensures all skaters who visit that coach will have the same quality instruction on the topic of the day.  This allows for optimal progressions and opportunities to meet different coaches benefiting from their unique coaching styles!

Badge System:

All skaters will earn ribbons and badges as they pass particular skills.  They must receive a ribbon in agility, balance and control to gain a badge.

For Example Agility 1 + Balance 1 + Control 1 = Stage 1

Some skaters are very strong in one discipline and may have multiple ribbons in one; for example Agility 1 + Balance 1 & 2 and no Control. They cannot receive their badge until the Control is completed.  Canskate is for skaters working on Badges 1-2, Fundamentals is 3-6.

As a reminder - a guardian needs to be at the rink in case anything happens and we need to get to you quickly.
