FIRST DAY INFO - CANSKATE - SPRING 2026

CanSkate / Fundamentals
Spring 2026

The East York Skating Club is very excited to welcome you to our CanSkate programs!

  • Tuesday sessions begin: April 28
  • Thursday sessions begin: April 30

Equipment
All skaters must have the following:

  • Sharpened skates (hockey or figure skates)
    • We do not recommend plastic skates, as they do not allow for proper ankle and knee bending
    • Dull blades will not grip the ice
  • CSA-approved hockey helmet
    • Required until Stage 5 is completed
    • A cage is recommended for Pre-CanSkate
  • Mitts/gloves for warmth and hand protection
  • Coat/jacket
  • Beginner skaters: waterproof pants are recommended, as skaters will be practicing falling and getting up

Please see the Skate Canada video for more information:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTQ2Yr5pdR0

Arena Entry

  • Please arrive early to allow time for parking, as our lot fills up quickly
  • Allow at least 20 minutes to put on skates and helmets and check in
  • For new families, we will have someone at the front to complete an equipment check
  • On the first session, a volunteer will be at the front desk in the lobby to hand out nametags
  • Skaters will place their sticker nametag on their helmet, and a coloured dot will indicate their group
  • Skaters and parents can then proceed downstairs to choose a changeroom and get ready
  • Entry and exit flow for all sessions is attached to this email

Session Flow

For the first session, our On-Ice Coordinator will group skaters based on their current level. New skaters will be placed in Stage 1.

If your skater is coming from another club, please email us their previous achievements so we can place them appropriately.

Over the first few weeks, skaters may be moved between groups based on coach assessment to ensure the best fit. A coloured sticker on their nametag/helmet will indicate their group.

CanSkate and Fundamentals skaters will have a group warm-up, approximately 30 minutes of instruction, followed by a group activity and cool down. Classes focus on three key areas:

  • Balance (forward skating, edges, crossovers)
  • Agility (turns, spins, jumps)
  • Control (stopping, backward skating, speed)

Once groups are established, skaters will rotate through stations with different coaches, allowing them to receive consistent instruction across all disciplines and benefit from different coaching styles.

Teen and Adult CanSkate skaters will have a short warm-up, followed by a group lesson based on level, and time at the end to ask questions and practice independently.

Badge System

Skaters earn ribbons in three areas: Agility, Balance, and Control.
To earn a badge, all three must be completed at the same level.

Example:
Agility 1 + Balance 1 + Control 1 = Stage 1

Some skaters may progress faster in certain areas, but all three categories must be completed to move up.

  • CanSkate: Stages 1–2
  • Fundamentals: Stages 3–6

A parent or guardian must remain at the rink during sessions in case assistance is needed.

SUPPORT THE EAST YORK SKATING CLUB – 50/50 FUNDRAISER

Support the East York Skating Club, a registered non-profit dedicated to fostering a love of skating in our community.

Our exciting 50/50 draw gives one lucky winner the chance to take home half of all ticket sales as a cash prize, while the remaining proceeds go directly toward reducing ice costs for members aged 18 and under in the coming year.

Empowering Youth Skating

Funds raised help us create more opportunities for young skaters by expanding ice time and keeping programs affordable. This allows local children to learn to skate in a safe and supportive environment, build confidence, develop a lifelong passion for the sport, and continue participating in lessons and our annual ice show.
